Packaging efficiency rarely comes from one dramatic change — it comes from removing small amounts of friction across thousands of repetitions per shift. Here are seven places worth auditing.
1. Standardize tape width to your carton mix
Running too many tape widths across a facility increases changeover time and stock-keeping complexity. Most operations can consolidate to two widths — one for standard cartons, one for oversized or heavy loads — without losing sealing performance.
2. Match unwind tension to sealer settings
A tape that's technically strong enough but unwinds inconsistently on your specific sealer model will cause more downtime than a slightly lower-spec tape that runs smoothly. Ask your supplier for a trial roll before switching your whole facility.
3. Position stock where it's used, not where it's easiest to store
Time spent walking to a central tape store adds up across a shift. Small buffer stock at each packing station, replenished on a set cycle, consistently outperforms centralized storage for high-frequency consumables.
4. Pre-cut and pre-fold corner protectors for repeat SKUs
If a product line ships in the same carton size repeatedly, pre-cutting corner protection and pre-folding it removes seconds per carton — which becomes hours per week at volume.
5. Track reopens, not just spend
Cost-per-roll is easy to measure and often the wrong metric. Reopened or damaged shipments cost far more in replacement, customer service time, and reputation than the tape itself ever saves.
6. Cross-train on tape changeovers
Roll changeovers on automatic sealers are a common bottleneck when only one staff member per shift knows how to do them quickly. Cross-training removes single points of failure during peak periods.
7. Review your specification annually, not once
Product mix, carton weights, and seasonal temperature swings change. A tape grade specified two years ago may no longer be the right fit — a short annual review with your supplier usually surfaces an easy optimization.
